The Art Department at Augustana University is seeking the tenure track faculty position of Assistant Professor of Graphic Design/New Media beginning Fall 2022. 

Primary Responsibilities: (1) Instruction of design and graphic design studio courses for majors and non-majors, (2) instruction of moving image and/or new media elective courses for majors and non-majors, (3) advising undergraduates, and (4) service to the University community.

Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence, an on-going artistic studio practice and creative research, and provide service to the institution. The university seeks individuals with drive, an appreciation for diversity, and talent to teach undergraduate courses in graphic design with additional course emphasis in one or more of the following areas: new media, web design, computer animation, digital storytelling. The development of new course offerings is expected, and the ability to teach moving image, and some foundation courses is a favorable advantage for this position. Normal teaching load is three courses per semester and one course in the January interim (3-1-3). The courses taught will include Design 1, Graphic Design 1, Advanced Graphic Design, and art electives. Successful candidates will share and maintain the computer laboratory classroom space, with printers, computers and other digital media tools.

Successful applicants will have a demonstrated dedication to undergraduate education, a commitment to innovative teaching, proof of excellence in studio work, a distinguished exhibition record or equivalent in professional graphic design portfolio, and the ability to meet the flexible instructional needs of the department. Interacting with students, faculty, and leadership with different backgrounds and points of view and a deep appreciation of and respect for academic values and culture must be a top value of the candidate.

Qualifications: 

Minimum Education: MFA strongly preferred or similar industry experience

Minimum Experience/Training: 

Demonstrated expertise and skill in graphic design, with preference given to candidates having experience in digital filmmaking, web design, new media, and/or animation. 

Three years of professional experience

The successful candidate must have a commitment to college-level teaching

The successful candidate must be willing and able to teach in both the traditional face-to-face and blended (hybrid) format.

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain active professional development activities and service to the Department and College. Committee work is expected. 

Salary: Salary is competitive and dependent upon qualifications.
