What You’ll Do:

We’re looking for a talented Contract Writer to help us develop an exciting new audio project at Calm that will create a unique way for millions of people to kick start their day. The successful candidate will research and co-write a steady pipeline of scripts to be narrated by a charismatic host.

Each session will center on a practical insight that helps listeners pursue personal growth in an inspiring, entertaining way. The series will explore a wide array of themes and subjects, such as goal setting, habit building, productivity, behavioral change, improving self-awareness, finding purpose, overcoming fear, realizing dreams, and coping with adversity. These insights will be brought to life with the power of narrative, featuring anything from stories to scientific research, ancient philosophy to famous movie scenes.

We’re open to writers cut from any cloth. Your professional background might involve broadcast journalism, screenwriting, late night television, creative nonfiction, podcast, radio, documentary, courseware, or some strange and fantastic combination thereof.

While we’re open to candidates with part-time availability, this is ideally a full-time contract engagement for 4 to 6 months, with strong potential to extend beyond.

Collaborate with a small team of talented writers and producers to generate ideas, refine concepts, outline sessions Research topics and themes in the personal growth genre, such as productivity tips, life hacks, inspiring ideas, self-care, stoic wisdom, timeless philosophy, and more Refine concepts into concise outlines Write a healthy batch of sessions each month Quickly rework and revise drafts based on feedback from producers Apply a stylistic edit pass for production
Craft catchy titles and intriguing descriptions that are mnemonic, playful, and inspiring Communicate with your team, author content, and track progress using basic content creation and project management tools, like Google Docs, Slack, Asana, and Dropbox Who You Are:

A versatile writer comfortable working with tight deadlines and full autonomy Especially skilled in these areas: Able to write for the ear, in an monologue style crafted for vocal delivery and auditory consumption Experienced with narrative nonfiction genres, and able to make a point or convey an idea using compelling narrative and clever phrasing Able to write for a distinctive speaker, using a voice that’s elevated yet conversational Well-versed in the personal development space, or at least excited to dive into it! A professional writer with air-tight discipline and process Outlines before writing A stickler for concision Adept at editing your own material Strong research skills Able to apply the sourcing and fact-checking practices of journalism Comfortable in a highly collaborative environment At home in a writers’ room, comfortable pitching and punching up ideas A Yes-And attitude Able to share and receive constructive feedback, kill darlings, and crank out rewrites quickly and effectively Knack for giving incisive notes in a clear, collaborative manner Able to write on assignment and fall in love with a new topic Comfortable working in a growing technology enterprise (software tools, remote work, flexible hours, fast pace) Sharp communication skills: verbal, writing, pitching, listening An internal, independent drive to create content of high quality, integrity, and impact Nice-to-Haves:

Experience with meditation, knowledge of mindfulness philosophy Editing or producing experience Background writing for audio content A strong portfolio of produced or published work Background working on an ongoing series, such as a podcast or TV series Knowledge of Calm’s content Writing Sample:

We would like to read a writing sample from a nonfiction work, ideally something that is educational or instructional in nature, but has a strong narrative element. This could be any form, format, genre, or length, and could be published or unpublished. Ideal samples would be on the shorter side.
